By María Teresa Hernández | Associated PressTIJUANA, Mexico — It’s Sunday night and Crystal P. Lira is not answering her messages. Inside the headquarters of Colectiva Bloodys y Projects, an organization that has supported reproductive rights near the U.S.-Mexico border since 2016, her only concern is for the woman she has provided with a safe space to get an abortion.Lira, who lives in Tijuana, in northern Mexico, is one among dozens of Mexican “acompañantes” — volunteers who support women wanting to terminate a pregnancy. Located all over the country, most acompañantes offer virtual guidance through an abortion protocol in which no clinics or prescriptions are needed.Developed by activists after decades of facing abortion bans and restrictions in most of Mexico’s 32 states, the protocol encourages women to trust self-managed medication abortions following guidelines established by the World Health Organization.“Accompaniment means that we facilitate information, medications and ev...What to know in the latest Israel-Hamas war

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen shot and killed six construction workers overnight in the volatile southwestern Baluchistan province, Pakistani police said Saturday.Police officer Hidayatullah Dashti said gunmen opened fire overnight at eight construction workers in the city of Turbat, about 377 miles (about 606 kilometers) south of Quetta — the capital of the province. Two survived, he said, and were hospitalized for treatment. Dashti said the workers were part of a private construction project in the city.No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. For nearly two decades, Baluchistan has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by the Baluchistan Liberation Army and other separatist groups demanding independence from the central government in the capital, Islamabad. Baluch separatists also often target people from Punjab. Punjabi and Sindhi workers were previously targeted. Although the government says it has quelled the insurgency, violence in the province has persi...Live updates | Day 8 of the latest Israel-Hamas war

Israel’s military ordered hundreds of thousands of civilians living in Gaza City to evacuate ahead of a feared Israel ground offensive. The directive came Friday on the heels of what the United Nations said was a warning it received from Israel to evacuate 1.1 million people living in northern Gaza. Palestinians and some Egyptian officials fear that Israel ultimately hopes to push Gaza’s people out through the southern border with Egypt.Currently:1. People are scrambling to evacuate northern Gaza even as Hamas told Palestinians to stay home2. No decision on a ground offensive has been announced, although Israel has been massing troops along the Gaza border3. An Israeli shell landed in a gathering of international journalists covering clashes on the border in southern Lebanon on Friday, killing one and wounding six4. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians scrambled to flee northern Gaza on Saturday after Israel ordered nearly half the population to flee south and carried out limited ground forays ahead of an expected land offensive, as the war appeared set to escalate a week after Hamas’ bloody, wide-ranging attack into Israel. Israel has ordered some 1 million people to flee, including the entire population of Gaza City, despite warnings from the U.N. and aid groups that such an exodus would cause untold human suffering, with hospital patients and others unable to relocate. Families in cars, trucks and donkey carts packed with their possessions crowded a main road heading southward from Gaza City as Israeli airstrikes continued to hammer the besieged territory. Hamas’ media office said warplanes struck cars fleeing south, killing more than 70 people. The Israeli military said its troops conducted temporary raids into Gaza to battle militants and hunted for traces of some 150 people...Voting closes in New Zealand’s election, with polls indicating people favor a conservative change

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Voting closed Saturday in New Zealand and ballot counting was underway in a general election, with opinion polls indicating people were favoring a conservative change after six years of a liberal government led for most of that time by Jacinda Ardern.Warm spring weather in the largest city of Auckland seemed to encourage voters, with queues forming outside some polling places. Early voting before Election Day was lower than in recent elections.Ardern unexpectedly stepped down as prime minister in January, saying she no longer had “enough in the tank” to do the job justice. She won the last election in a landslide, but her popularity waned as people got tired of COVID-19 restrictions and inflation threatened the economy. Her departure left Chris Hipkins, 45, to take over as leader. He had previously served as education minister and led the response to the coronavirus pandemic. But polling indicated his conservative rival, former businessman Christopher Lux...CU Buffs blow 29-point halftime lead, lose 46-43 to Stanford in double-OT

BOULDER — The Buffs were on the doorstep of bowl eligibility, and one win from checking off a major milestone in Deion Sanders’ transformative program overhaul. That is, until they blew a 29-point halftime lead in one of the most shocking losses in program history, an epic collapse that saw CU fall to Stanford in double-OT at Folsom Field, 46-43.“I’m truly upset and truly disturbed,” a stunned Coach Prime said. “We finally put it together in the first half like the players desired… Then we come out and surrender three unanswered touchdowns to start (the second half). I can’t fathom it or wrap my head around it.“Big win by them, horrible loss by us.”Instead of sitting at 5-2 heading into the second half of the season with a gust of momentum, the Buffs spiraled with a disastrous second half on Friday to fall to 4-3 after suffering the largest blown lead in program history. Stanford roared back thanks to an unstoppable performa...CU Buffs vs. Stanford: Travis Hunter returns, but how the heck did Shedeur Sanders, Buffs blow 29-0 lead?

Initial observations from the CU Buffs’ 46-43 double-overtime loss to the Stanford Cardinal in head coach Deion Sanders’ second Pac-12 home game at Folsom Field on Friday:1. This is was 6-6 looks like, kids. Or … 5-7. Remember that stuff that got Coach Prime heated in Tempe? Yeah, well, half of it is still there. On the plus side, hey, the Buffs shook off that slow-start thing, right? CU came out rolling one-win Stanford like the Homecoming cupcake they were supposed to be, notching TDs on their first four drives to take a commanding 29-0 lead. Then the old Buffs showed up: Missed assignments, bad angles, bad fits, inconsistent pass protection and kickoffs — again — that went out of bounds. Again. Oh, and penalties, penalties, penalties. Early in the third quarter, Stanford scored 19 points in a span of just 3:46. The Buffs got USC-ed in their own house.2. Travis Hunter is bionic … to a point. If you’d have guessed that CU’s two-way star would hav...Latest news
