General manager Bill Guerin says Wild’s poor start is on the players

The Wild returned from Sweden on Monday with a five-game losing streak (0-3-2) and a lot of serious questions about the future of this team’s season. They’re not simply underachieving; they’re one of the worst teams in the NHL.“Things can change,” general manager Bill Guerin said during an interview with the Pioneer Press on Tuesday. “We’re better than a lot of teams that are ahead of us. We need to focus.”But it has to start, like, now.The Wild have only played 17 of 82 regular-season games, but they head into Friday’s 7 p.m. puck drop against Colorado at Xcel Energy Center 11 points behind first-place Dallas in the Central Division, and five points out of Western Conference playoff position.Guerin and coach Dean Evason said they liked a lot more of what they saw during a 2-1 shootout loss to Ottawa and 3-2 overtime loss to Toronto in last weekend’s Global Series games, and the team certainly looked better than it did in an 8-3 loss to Dallas in its last game before leaving for Sto...Gophers football’s path to bowl game with 5-7 record remains possible

The Gophers football team is assured only more game this season: the Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe against Wisconsin at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.“We got one week guaranteed left, so let’s go make the most of it,” defensive end Danny Striggow said after a 37-3 loss to No. 2 Ohio State last weekend. “It’s against a team like Wisconsin, where you have so much on the line.”If the Gophers (5-6 overall) win, they will retain the Axe for three consecutive years for the first time since the mid-1980s. If they win the rivalry game, they will reach bowl eligibility with six wins. But there’s a chance that even if the Gophers, two-point underdog on Saturday, lose to the Badgers and fall to 5-7 overall, Minnesota might still advance to a bowl game because there might not be enough six-win outfits to fill out the full bowl schedule. Here’s the breakdown:Total bowl teams needed: 82Teams qualified with 6 wins: 67Open spots remaining: 15Current 5-win teams: 24If the Gophers lose t...Longtime Twins announcer Dick Bremer given lifetime achievement award

He managed the Cardinals from 2018 to 2021 to the tune of a 252-199 (.559 winning percentage). Though Shildt led St. Louis to the postseason in each of his last three seasons, the Cardinals parted ways with him after the 2021 campaign. ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - The Hispanic Bar Association of St. Louis has condemned actions from St. Charles County against a potential plan to bring Latin immigrants to the St. Louis region. Last week, St. Charles County officials contemplated a resolution in opposition to immigrants coming to the Greater St. Louis Area. Resolution 2308 was ultimately tabled. DETROIT — On the side of the tunnel nobody could see, two exiles who were last seen making a scene before exiting through said tunnel in states of indignant calm now stood waiting together. Their earlier expressions were replaced with giddy smiles, like they had plotted it this way from the beginning. They hadn’t, though.Michael Malone and Nikola Jokic greeted the Nuggets with high-fives and hugs as players and coaches walked off the court late Monday night at Little Caesars Arena, following a 107-103 Nuggets win over the upstart Pistons. The head coach and star player were reduced to hype men, so they embraced it. After all, their outbursts were responsible for sending a game that was supposed to be a much-needed cake-walk off the rails.Ejected 12 minutes apart, Malone was joined by Jokic to watch on television together as a suddenly different version of the Nuggets tried to navigate an unusual second half without them or Jamal Murray.“Nikola, I think he was concerned about my ...Opinion: Our luxuries — like flushing toilets — are fragile, as the wilderness reminds us

Guides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they’re “dudes,” on the river they’re “mers” — short for customers — and they’re “sticks” if you’re trying to trick a trout. Sometimes the terms trend a little negative — “flatlander” comes to mind, and there’s another name I’ve come to use but need to explain it.It comes out of what I do: For the last decade, I’ve guided multi-day whitewater fly-fishing trips through western Colorado’s Gunnison Gorge during the summer. Then I spend the fall guiding horseback hunting outfits in the wilderness. It adds up to around 100 nights a year sleeping rough.I’ve met a lot of people from all over the country, and, sad to say, too many seem oblivious to how scarce clean water is in the outback and also how much work it takes to make water safe for drinking. That’s why I sometimes call them “water poopers.”Spill a big batch of filtered water, treat a horse like a car rather than a living ...Suspect's attempt to hide in a port-a-potty goes horribly wrong
